When you need a new lawn, you have two options: seed or sod. Seeding is cheaper upfront, but it takes months to fill in, requires constant watering, and can fail if conditions are not perfect. Sod gives you an instant lawn that looks great from day one. You can walk on it in weeks instead of months, and it establishes much faster than seed.

New sod needs extra attention for the first few weeks while it roots into the soil. During this time, proper watering is the most important thing you can do. We will give you a watering schedule to follow, but the basic rule is to keep the sod moist without making it soggy.

First Two Weeks: Water Daily

For the first two weeks, water your new sod once or twice a day. The goal is to keep the sod and the top inch of soil consistently moist. Lift a corner of the sod to check. If the soil underneath is dry, you need to water more. If it is soggy, cut back a little.

Weeks Three to Four: Reduce Watering

As the sod starts rooting, reduce watering to every other day. By the end of the fourth week, your sod should be rooted enough that you can start transitioning to a normal watering schedule. You can test this by gently pulling on the grass. If it resists, the roots are taking hold.

First Mow and Beyond

Wait until your new sod is at least three inches tall before mowing. Use a sharp blade and only cut off the top third of the grass height. After the first mow, you can treat your sod like an established lawn. When to Install Sod

Sod can be installed almost any time of year in Dunwoody, but spring and fall are ideal. The cooler temperatures and regular rainfall help sod establish faster with less stress.
